5-6-7 Meshes: Remeshing and analysis

چکیده
We introduce a new type of meshes called 5-6-7 meshes. For many mesh processing tasks, lowor high-valence vertices are undesirable. At the same time, it is not always possible to achieve complete vertex valence regularity, i.e., to only have valence-6 vertices. A 5-6-7 mesh is a closed triangle mesh where each vertex has valence 5, 6, or 7. An intriguing question is whether it is always possible to convert an arbitrary mesh into a 5-6-7 mesh. In this paper, we answer the question in the positive. We present a 5-6-7 remeshing algorithm which converts a closed triangle mesh with arbitrary genus into a 5-6-7 mesh which a) closely approximates the original mesh geometrically, e.g., in terms of feature preservation, and b) has a comparable vertex count as the original mesh. We demonstrate the results of our remeshing algorithm on meshes with sharp features and different topology and complexity.

567-meshes are a new type of closed and 2-manifold triangular meshes introduced by Aghdaii et al. in 2012 [1]. Vertices with valence less than 5 or greater than 7 are problematic for many mesh processing tasks such as edge collapse or surface subdivision. However, vertices with valence equal to 6 everywhere is most often impossible due to either surface topology or surface feature preservation,...

The use of polygonal meshes, especially triangle meshes, is manifold, but a lot of algorithms require the mesh to be structured in a certain way and cannot be applied to an arbitrarily structured mesh. The process of replacing an arbitrarily structured mesh by a structured one is called remeshing and the most important class of structered meshes are triangle meshes with subdivision connectivity...
متن کاملGeneration of Mesh Variants via Volumetrical Representation and Subsequent Mesh Optimisation
Having reliable finite element (FE) meshes is one of the basics of reliable FE simulations. As development times i.e. in the car industry are expected to decrease, engineers need to edit and optimise FE meshes without access to the underlying CAD geometry. If meshes are not only locally effected by the editing operation, simple mesh optimisations such as mesh relaxation or local remeshing are n...
